Day 9: Hiking the Drake Bay Trail

 March 11

What did we do?

We started walking the Drake Bay Trail soon after breakfast and I was hoping that we would make it as far as Playa San Josecito but we took our time exploring all the little beaches along the way and watching birds and monkeys. We also discovered a sloth about ten feet up a tree and had a hard time pulling ourselves away as you don't usually see them so close.

The Drake Bail trail is not technically difficult; it is primarily shaded and flat with only one short steep section. But by the time we reached Playa Caletas, it was getting late and the heat and humidity had drained us. We regretfully turned back, stopping along the way for a long swim near the Van Van House. There was a shaded shelter here with picnic tables and an outdoor shower. We chatted with the friendly Enrique, who said he owned the property and was happy for us to use the amenities.

Where did we eat?
Every hike needs a couple of KIND Bars for energy and today was no exception. We had another mediocre dinner; this time at Roberto's in Drake Bay. It is located adjacent to the beach, with nice views, but the food was nothing to boast about.

Travel Note:

If you want to hike all the way to Playa San Josecito, but don’t want to do the return hike, you could try pre-arranging a ride back to Drake Bay on one of the snorkeling boats that stop there in the early afternoon on their way back from Cano Island.
