Day 7: Crossing the Sierpe River on a barge

 March 9

What did we do?

We had wanted to do a boat tour on the Sierpe River so decided to spend a night in the Sierpe area before traveling on to Drake Bay. Getting there was half the fun.

We left Uvita around noon and reached Sierpe about an hour later. We crossed the river on a small car ferry (barge) powered by an outboard motor. It was at this moment in the trip where I started to feel like I was on a real adventure.

We landed on the other side and drove up the hill for about fifteen minutes to reach Finca la Puesta del Sol.

After settling into our cabin at Finca la Puesta we enjoyed a late afternoon walk along the Rio Sierpe road, led along by our little guide, ironically named Toro. The views along the road’s high points were amazing; looking towards the Golfito Dulce on one side and the Sierpe River wetlands stretching to the Pacific Ocean on the other.

Where did we stay?

Finca la Puesta del Sol  is a charming and rustic place, with studio cabins and the most amazing views overlooking the Sierpe River wetlands towards the Pacific Ocean. They have a restaurant and the food was simple but tasty. They even have a small swimming pool which was so refreshing after walking in the heat and humidity. The wifi is only available in the restaurant, but the cell service is excellent. We were warmly welcomed and they helped us arrange an early morning boat tour the next day on the Sierpe River. They don't have a website, but you can connect with them on Facebook .

Where did we eat?

We had a simple, but tasty casada dinner at Finca la Puesta del Sol and breakfast there the next day.

About an hour after this photo we were hit by a huge storm
