What did we do?
The sunrises at Playa Pan Dulce are spectacular and we were awake and enjoying our first cup of coffee when an anteater casually strolled across the lawn. Hoping to still catch the early morning wildlife activity we set off after breakfast for a walk to the end of the Cabo Matapalo road (about 3 km one way).

Look who's casually strolling across our front lawn |
The rock/dirt road is mercifully shaded by trees and takes you past numerous small beaches ending around Playa Matapalo. It’s fun to watch the surfers, but the water is too rough for swimming. We saw many birds and monkeys along the way.

Seeing the signs for King Luis waterfall near the end of the road we took a detour up the hill to the waterfall trail. I was not feeling confident on the leaf-strewn, narrow path with its steep drop-off down to the river so I decided to turn back while the rest of the group continued on. Unfortunately, the waterfall was a mere trickle at this time of year.

Travel Tip:
READ THIS IMPORTANT INFO - This is a very accurate quote from a Google review from Brad Doney. The sign for the waterfall directs you to follow the trail to the right, to the creek bed of the river. Hard and somewhat dangerous climbing. Instead, follow the roadway up to the left of the sign about 20 metres to find the trail that runs parallel to the river. Trust me!
